The Neiman Marcus for Target Disaster

So I woke up at 7:30 am on a Saturday to go look at a whole bunch of ugly.

I had been counting down the days for Neiman Marcus for Target.  I experienced the madness of Missoni for Target.  I went to about 7 stores all over the Chicagoland area on a hunt for what remains I could find after the soccer mom’s got their hands on everything.  A security guard was actually protecting the Neiman Marcus items yesterday because apparently there was a brawl in the dressing room for Missoni.

I personally consider shopping a full-contact sport.  When designer goods go on sale, bitches be crazy… I’ve almost had to knock out a few myself.

In case you haven’t ventured out or you can get your hands on some of the stuff online, I thought I would give you the lowdown.  First, I don’t blame Neiman Marcus or Target for this hideous display of material goods.  I blame the designers.  I blame them hardcore.  Apparently, they didn’t get the memo that Missoni stepped it up for Target.  Just because you have to use cheaper materials, doesn’t mean I need to look like I got lost in a thrift store in an array of bipolar time periods.

Since I am feeling quite generous today, I’m going to start out with what I actually like.

The majority of my picks are children’s clothing.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any children, nor do I know any children to buy it for.  One thing I noticed about this collection is that it photographs poorly.

1.) Lela Rose Top – This looks much nicer in person.  In the photo it looks quite flat and a weird nude shade, but in person I think it would look great under a structured blazer.

2.) Marc Jacobs Pouch – I got the ‘gunmetal’ shade.  This is the only item I don’t regret purchasing!

(Notice how it is nearly impossible to see the Marc Jacobs logo… he’s probably embarrassed to see his name with this collection.  Can we blame him?)

3.) Robert Rodriguez Dress- I liked this a lot in the store.  I have no where to wear it to so I didn’t purchase it, but if you have a nice holiday party to go to… grab it!

4.) Marchesa Girl’s Dress – I actually purchased this on my first trip to Target (yes, I went twice.)  I LOVED IT!  Unfortunately, I’m 5’7 and it was too short, even though it fit size-wise.  If you are shorter… definitely give it a try.

5.) Rag and Boy Men’s & Boy’s Sweater – I bought the boy’s sweater too.  I like kid’s clothing, what can I say?  I think I am going to end up returning it, but it’s a must for boys!

6.) Jason Wu Girl’s Dress – The Printed Dress and the Solid Dress are adorable!  I can’t believe the price point on some of these girl’s dresses.  The Marchesa was $100 and the Jason Wu’s are $60, but they are too cute.

Now, it’s time to be honestly cruel.

1.) Oscar de la Renta Tote – This was the item I was most excited for and ended up being the biggest sham.  It looks NOTHING like this in person.

First, it’s cream, not white.  It looks as if the floral design would be lace or embroidered… something 3-dimentional.  It’s not.  It’s actually cheap canvas.

2.) Robert Rodriguez Top – I looked like a clown.  No joke, the ruffles? Horrible.  It cinches in at a weird place below your waist, so it created a second set of hips… no one wants nor needs that!

3.) Prabal Gurung Cape – Worst of all, the cape.  My mom told me I looked like a magician in the Wild West.  I think she’s correct.  Cheap sequins and a badly shaped bow were a disaster.

Please don’t end up like this for the sake of label-whoring.

All-in-all, the only thing I’m probably going to keep is the Marc Jacobs pouch.  I also got the Proenza Schouler sweatshirt… but I’m not over the moon about it.

Some of the home furnishing items weren’t horrible, but I have no use for them.

What did you get?

Any hits or misses for you?

I hate to say it but this post cracked me up! I’m sorry you had such a horrible experience… everything sounds awful! I wasn’t in the States for the Missoni release but I heard nothing but great things about the event… this one not so much. I saw some of the previews on Good Morning America and in magazines a few weeks back and wasn’t impressed with what they were showing. Because I mean, really, A Tory Burch thermos?

The collection is an utter disappointment. Nothing special, nothing that stands out, too much hype and nothing to back it up. I went into Target today, thinking the designer stuff would have flew off shelves by now but it litterally looked like everything was freshly stocked and untouched. I agree, I blame the designers, they seemed lazy with it, like eveything was thrown together with out a care and at the last minute. What a shame. The only thing I’d consider buying is that pink dog collar, i think its by Oscar De La Renta. Meh.

Totally agree! I was at Target yesterday and the entire collection is still there… because no one wants that kind of ugly :(

I bought one of each color of the Judith Leiber mirrors. To me those were the best offers from this collection. I also bought the Altuzara Tray, glasses and martini shaker. Yes the glasses and shaker have seams but they are reminiscent of depression glassware. The only items I really loved were the mirrors.

Ooh! I loved those Altuzara glasses as well! The home decor items weren’t too shabby… if only I had a need for them ;)

I must add when the collection went to 70% off, I made one more trip to get the Alice and Olivia Bike. I don’t regret it! I live in South Beach and it fits perfectly in with the almost year round Sunny Florida weather. Plus at $149.99 and the additional service of Neiman Marcus putting it together for free for me, I could not say no.

If I lived in Florida, that bike would be amazing at 70% off. That’s nice they put the bike together as well!

The stuff was ugly…we didn’t have all of it in our local store, but the stuff I saw, I wouldn’t have bought even at 70% off. There was a satin top that looked super-cheap in quality (don’t remember the designer). The bicycle actually was cute, but for $500? Not happening.

There definitely were some design flaws. I would have paid a pretty price for those labels, but not if the style element is missing. Ugly is ugly, no matter what the cost!

First off – congrats on Time .com linking to your post!

I bought some things (the Oscar de la Renta bag, the Marchesa dress, wrapping paper) from NM.com at midnight. I ended up sending everything back after going to Target and seeing everything in stock, with all sizes represented.

By the time it hit 70% off there was still a good selection. I ended up getting the fur hat. Now it’s completely gone from both sites and both stores, although I have heard some things might be available in Last Call.

I wonder if it will end up where most Target shelf pulls end up in So Cal ….Goodwill.

Otherwise eBay is the place to find the remnants.

Thank you so much! Wow, I didn’t hear that Last Call was carrying this stuff too. Many of the items didn’t seem as hideous when the price was right. I went back and picked up another Marc Jacobs clutch.

Well… I missed it. Somehow, I never heard of the promotion and didn’t see anything in my local store. I don’t go often to the web site (although I should… I work for a competitor). Thanks to your site I was able to get a peak at what was offered.

BTW, followed the link from Time to your site.

Glad I could be of some help! Many of the items weren’t too shabby, once they lowered the price that is.

I do accept as true with all the concepts you’ve
offered on your post. They’re very convincing and will definitely work.
Still, the posts are very quick for newbies.
Could you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time?
    Thanks for the post.
